Achieve More with Less
One of my favourite quotes attributed to the Chinese philosopher Confucius is,
“The man who chases two rabbits, catches neither”
Run rabbit run!!!!
Many business leaders find it difficult to chase just one rabbit. They don’t know how to set a winning strategy.
They set too many goals, or they try to execute too many projects simultaneously.
Successful business leaders know when to say NO.
As Steve Jobs said,
“People think focus means saying ‘yes’ to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all.
It means saying ‘NO’ to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.
I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things we have done.”
Why do so many business leaders seem to have ADD? They get distracted by the latest “rabbit” that appears in front of them, and run off chasing after that, whilst neglecting to focus on the vital few things that will drive future success.
“Busyness” does not mean you are running a good Business.
Why do people delude themselves into thinking they can multitask?
Unfortunately, numerous studies show that even though we think we are doing a great job of multitasking, it actually reduces our productivity and impairs the brain’s ability to learn.
You may think you are productive when juggling multiple activities, but this is an illusion. The time it takes to finish any one activity increases by an average of 25 percent. It is actually far more productive to do “1 Thing” at a time in a burst of intensely focused energy.
Let’s face it. There is never enough time to get everything done, so focus your valuable time on the vital few things that really matter, rather than being busy on the many things that don’t.
Achieve more by doing less.
Great business execution is all about the “1 Thing”. If you could only achieve “1 Thing” this week to move each goal forward, what would be the most important thing?
Peter Drucker recommended setting aside 4 hours of uninterrupted time in your diary per week to work solely on the “1 Thing”. He believed this discipline was critical to get the important things done.
Your job as a leader is to make sure the “1 Thing” is clear every week for each goal, and for each person.
Hold your people accountable to stay focused on their “1 Thing” until they get it done.
Stop chasing 2 rabbits.
